The Truth about Channeled Messages

As the truth seems to get more and more diluted with every passing day, giving way to doctrines of man and devil alike, let us examine another resurgent phenomenon being promulgated among the self-proclaimed “spiritually sensitive” out there – channeled messages.

Channeling has been around in one form or another since ancient times, and is even referred to in the Old Testament as divination. In the 19th and 20th centuries, this practice became quite fashionable, as desperate people would consult with mediums to supposedly communicate with deceased relatives. This practice was adopted among religious congregations and cults, who purported to receive and dispense messages from “higher beings”, packaged as hope, insight, wisdom, and sometimes warning for humanity. What is interesting, as although these messages are supposedly from different beings, across different times in history, they remain eerily consistent in their content.

Oahspe: A New Bible
Automatic writing became one popular form of collecting and penning such revelations. The writer would enter into some level of trance-like state, and either write or type without being aware or paying attention to what was being written. One such work was published by a dentist in 1882 named John Ballou Newbrough (1828–1891). This volume was called Oahspe: A New Bible, which contained over 900 pages of automatically typed messages channeled through Newbrough. The book proposed a new order for mankind, new commandments, alleged revelations of heaven and the angels, and moral and ethical codes in which one is to adhere to in order to achieve salvation. The entire work is attributed to be delivered from God, whom Newbrough calls “Jehovih”.

The key doctrines of the Oahspe are as follows:

  • Maintaining a vegan diet, pacifism, service to others, angelic assistance, and communal living.
  • Refers to its dogma as “the religion of gods themselves”, in which adherents have no need for saviors or intermediaries. The Book of Inspiration, one of the books that make up the volume, says, “I will have no sect. I will have no creed”.
  • All people, regardless of religion or who they worship in life, are permitted life after death. In death, they are transformed into angelic hosts. The conditions of the afterlife that they experience are directly correlated with their works in life, whether they were a good and decent person, or evil and wicked. Those who helped others and lived a humble life of service are permitted to the highest realm of the heavens.

The Oahspe contains accounts of the life and work of Zarathustra, the philosopher/astrologer/magician of which the religion Zoroastrianism is named. Adherents to the teachings of the Oahspe are called Faithists, and a remnant still exists primarily in the upper Atlantic and New England regions of the United States. A primary spiritual goal of all Faithists is to live a morally sound life and work to achieve “spiritual evolution” in life. This will prove to be a recurring theme.

The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ
Published by Levi H. Dowling in 1908, The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ: The Philosophic and Practical Basis of the Religion of the Aquarian Age of the World and of the Church Universal was an early work of the modern new age spiritualist movement.

Dowling reported that the work was comprised of translating the akashic records, which are an alleged compendium of works that share secret mystical knowledge, supposedly encoded in a non-physical plane of existence. The doctrine of the akashic records is a cornerstone of Theosophy, an occultic religion founded by H.P. Blavatsky, who claimed to decipher the records which she called “tablets of astral light”.

The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ continues the theme of deception disguised as spiritual awakening and intellectual revelation. The central message and doctrine includes:

  • A complete report of Jesus’ activities during the 18 years not accounted for in the Bible, “as a time when Jesus travels to the centers of wisdom in India, Tibet & Western India, Persia, Assyria, Greece, and Egypt. In each of these capital cities, he is educated, tested, and teaches the religious leaders. Jesus inevitably proves that he is ‘God’s chosen one’ (the Christ) in these locales and brings back this multi-cultural wisdom and confidence to Galilee & Judea.”
  • “Jesus puts on the role of The Christ, but is not automatically Christ by nature. By making himself, through desire, effort, ability and prayer, a fit vessel, Jesus enabled The Christ to dwell within him. Christ is therefore used as a term for the seemingly perfect human being that Jesus exemplified, a human being that has been “Christened” (anointed) and therefore made holy.”
  • “Jesus came to earth to show the way back to God via his lifestyle and teachings. He is the example we must model our own lives after, if we seek salvation.”
  • “Reincarnation exists and karma (“You reap what you sow”) is the explanation for various injustices. Reincarnation allows people to settle debts they have incurred in past lives.”
  • “All souls will eventually mature and evolve towards the perfect, like Jesus the Christ.”
  • “The trinity is strength, love and wisdom.”

The unbiblical deception in these teachings are evident, and are clearly designed to separate one from the truth of Jesus Christ being the perfect Son of God, the Word of God in the flesh, who shed His blood for the sins of mankind.

The Book of the Law
Certainly one of the more well known works reported to be received through channeling or spiritual communication, is The Book of the Law (or Liber AL vel Legis) by Aleister Crowley. Crowley, the famed occultist and mysticist who referred to himself as “the Great Beast”, claimed the work was dictated to him by a spiritual entity named Aiwass or Aiwaz. Several sections are written in the first person and attributed to other entities called Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit. The book, and the entities are central components of Crowley’s founded religion Thelema.

Crowley considered the book to be setting the stage for the new spiritual evolution of humanity he called the “Aeon of Horus”. The primary precept of this movement was the command to “do what thou wilt”. Thelemic doctrine proclaims, “do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law”.

Crowley reports to have received the messages at specific times, and even writes of a visual account of Aiwass, whom he calls a messenger of Horus. The other messengers are described as well. Crowley uses a familiar phrase to account for Nuit, the Egyptian goddess of the night sky, called the Queen of Space – in which he writes, “Lady of the Starry Heaven, who is also Matter in its deepest metaphysical sense, who is the infinite in whom all we live and move and have our being” (emphasis added). The latter portion of this description is of course used to describe God in the Bible in Acts 17:28. The twisting and manipulation of the Word of God will also continue to be a familiar theme. We know the original inspiration for such corruption was borne of the Nachash, the Shining One, the serpent, in the Garden of Eden when he proclaimed, “hath God really said?”

Other chapters are reported to be penned by Hadit, who Crowley describes as “the central core to all being”; and Ra-Hoor-Khuit, “the crowned and conquering child”. Such descriptions make it clear that a primary goal of these entities is to deceive and attribute to themselves the qualities of Christ; who is central to everything; born into the world as a child, crowned the King of kings with all glory and honor, and who will return to conquer.

Crowley later writes concerning the mysteries of “the Book”:

We may then expect the New Aeon to release mankind from its pretence of altruism, its obsession of fear and its consciousness of sin. It will possess no consciousness of the purpose of its own existence. It will not be possible to persuade it that it should submit to incomprehensible standards; it will suffer from spasms of transitory passion; it will be absurdly sensitive to pain and suffer from meaningless terror; it will be utterly conscienceless, cruel, helpless, affectionate and ambitious, without knowing why; it will be incapable of reason, yet at the same time intuitively aware of truth.

The clear themes of achieving higher consciousness, spiritual evolution where one doesn’t even have knowledge of sin, much less any need for permanent propitiation for it, continue to prevail.

Seth Material
Seth Material is a collection of works dictated by Jane Roberts to her husband, after allegedly having received revelations from a discarnate entity named Seth. The work is highly regarded as a cornerstone of the modern new age movement, and one of the most prolific channeled communications of the post World War II era.

Roberts would enter into long trances, and speak as Seth to her husband, who would write the transcript. When complete, she would have no recollection of the event. The content of the Seth sessions was highly metaphysical, with the focus on “self consciousness”. Roberts would report Seth as saying, “that each individual creates his or her own reality through thoughts, beliefs and expectations”. Topics such as reincarnation, karma, and the journey of the soul to higher consciousness were routine. The Seth philosophy could be summarized in that reality is a construct of one’s thoughts and consciousness, and that achieving a more perfect consciousness is obtained by changing one’s thoughts, expectations, and beliefs.

According to Seth, Jesus Christ exists as “part of the Christ entity” and is “a highly evolved entity who exists in many systems of reality”. The “Christ entity” is described as being disseminated into three components – John the Baptist, Jesus Christ, and Paul of Tarsus. According to Seth via Jane, achieving “Christ consciousness” is one of the pinnacles of higher self.

Miracle of the Sun
In October 1917, 30,000 to as many as 100,000 people witnessed an event near Fatima, Portugal that came to be known as “The Miracle of the Sun”. Earlier, three Portugese children, Lucia dos Santos, Jacinta Marto, and Francisco Marto, had experienced an apparition they reported to be the virgin Mary, who confided secrets to them. The apparition announced that it would perform amazing miracles so all would believe. At Fatima, tens of thousands of people witnessed what became known as the Miracle of the Sun, in which the sun was reported to be dancing in the sky and changing colors in front of the masses. A newspaper reported the event in this way: “…the silver sun, enveloped in the same gauzy purple light was seen to whirl and turn in the circle of broken clouds…The light turned a beautiful blue, as if it had come through the stained-glass windows of a cathedral, and spread itself over the people who knelt with outstretched hands…people wept and prayed with uncovered heads, in the presence of a miracle they had awaited. The seconds seemed like hours, so vivid were they.”

Prior to the event at Fatima, the children were told three secrets by the apparition. The first was a horrifying vision of hell, complete with burning souls writhing and screaming in agony, encircled by twisted demonic entities swirling around them. The second, was a message that included: “You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace…In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”

The third secret is still shrouded in mystery. The Vatican has reported it to be a vision of the last days where the pope is martyred along with many other priests and bishops. However, there is much controversy surrounding whether or not the entirety of the secret has been revealed.

What is clear, is that yet again, deception is evident. We know from the teaching of scripture that Mary cannot save anyone. She was merely called upon God as a vessel for bringing His son into the world in human form. Only Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.

The consistency in these messages are clear: that man can only save himself through his works and deeds; that one must strive to reach higher consciousness; and that there is no provision or need for a Savior. We believe that the sources of these revelations are entirely demonic, and are meant with the sole purpose of deceiving and separating people from the truth of God’s Word.

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons” – 1 Timothy 4:1

Do not be deceived!
